Phobia. - Work Diary

Work Diary

In todays photography session, I completed my second photoshoot based on two main fears for story telling. Snakes and Tarantulas. In this photo-shoot my main focus was on taking self portraits in the studio with these two creatures, but continue to show elegance in the photographs with my body positioning. By keeping the elegance the audience can be both shocked at the fear of the animals they see but also the way they would feel the comfort with the elegance. The positive point of this session was both that I managed to get over my fear of spiders but also how the elegance was still shown in the photographs which made the photo's flow nicely. The negative point of this photo-shoot was more simply that the lighting may have been done a little too darkly, this can help as an improvement for my next shoot to make sure I focus on the lighting the most.

My two selected photographs:

This is my first selected photograph in my second photo-shoot. In this photograph, we can see a self portrait of myself holding my face while looking at the camera with big eyes. The snake is shown to trail down onto the side of my face while the tail falls down the side of my neck and into my fingers. The elegance is shown in the pose and the phobia is shown with the snake on the face. The positive point of this photograph is the positioning of the snake on the face, this is a positive factor because it both balances the focus point out upon the snake and my eyes. The negative point of this photograph, could be that the photo is a little too dark, this is a negative factor because then the photo becomes way too basic for the audience. An improvement I would like to make to this photograph, would be too lighten the photograph with the curves and levels tool.

This is my second selected photograph in my second photo-shoot. In this photograph, we can see another self portrait but this time of my back as the spider is shown to run across it, away from the tattoo 'stay strong'. I placed the tattoo here as the spider runs away, to get the instant phobia of the spider before seeing the tattoo's meaning and it's elegance. The positive point of this photograph is the contrast between the spider and the tattoo, this is a positive factor because the audience can see the horror and the elegance clearly and become less fearful. I believe that this photo does not have a negative factor or improvement to reveal.

Further improvement:
For my further improvement, I would like to select the second shown photograph I have taken before placing it onto an old magazine cover talking about medical issues and how to deal with phobias. This will show how the story of this photograph would have been told too the public in a less intimidating way.
