Alternative look. - Work diary

Work Diary

In todays session, I decided to start my first shoot for 'Story telling'. In advanced, I had already booked my time in the studio for this session and found a model before I started this photoshoot. The model in this shoot changed her clothes from two dresses to a beanie, black vest and skinny jeans. Even though this photo-shoot was extremely simple, I have decided to use the idea of looking different and being beaten up for it as the story. This will all be simply photoshopped on. The positive highlights of todays session was that I was able to bond with the model to make her feel comfortable and managed to get nice portraits to work with, in photoshop. The only negative highlight I found was, the fact I was to care-free with the photographs, meant the model pulled mostly the same pose in most of the photographs. I can now look back on this for improvement on my next shoot.

My two selected photographs:

This is my first selected photograph in the first photo-shoot. In this photograph, we can see a close up portrait of the models face as she tilts her head and looks up above the camera. Her eye positioning in this but also her head positioning tell the emotions she's feeling while she's loosing hope. With the bruises and burns with blood shot eyes photoshopped across her face, the story can be told to the audience that she has been beaten up, but she still tries to find the hope in life. Who actually has beaten her up can be ambiguous amongst the audience. The positive point of this photograph is the blood shot eyes really stand out against the rest of her face, this is a positive factor because it draws the audience in more but also really displays the story in the photograph. The negative point of this photograph is that the lip's colour are too bright, this is a negative factor because it pulls the focus away from the eyes and shows the small mistakes and smudges of the lipstick. As an improvement, I would like to use the burn tool over her lips to darken them, before using the hue and saturation tool to tone down the colour.

This is my second selected photograph from the first shoot. In this photograph, we can see a portrait photograph from the models hips and upwards. This model is shown to be covered in tattoos, bracelets and dark grungy sort of clothing. This portrait tells the story of a different lifestyle compared to what society shows as 'best way too look.'. The positive point of this photograph is that the tattoos look realistic, this is a positive factor because it makes the photo look more grungy and in your face with the threatening emotion towards the audience. I believe that this photo does not have a negative factor to reveal. As an improvement I would like to place words behind in the background of a contrast of emotions to what the model shows.

Further development:
For my further development, I would like to choose my first photograph for a physical experiment. In this physical experiment, I would take a sharp item or pen and scratch only the eyes out in the models photograph, I would then apply words beside it about hope.
